When choosing the workpiece for the obverse closed string to improve the aesthetic appearance of the stairs, you should take well processed wood.



On the outer side of the closed strings one can apply decorative grooving with the help of a router or it can be enriched with carved elements.

To provide for the safety of stairs and also for load-carrying ability of closed strings, you shall adhere to minimum permissible sizes of the closed strings width and thickness, as well as of the treads width.


























Upper and lower ledges of the closed string shall make ≥ 50 mm.

This type of stairs has width limit due to its design peculiarities, because the closed strings can be positioned only at the edges of the stairs.
The balusters in such stairs are fastened either directly to the closed string or through the Baserail. You can read about fastening of balusters in more detail in Assembling Stairs section.

The last tread is executed as a part of the stairs. Stairs with closed strings have a reliable structure, beautiful appearance, and they can blend with any interior. Newel posts, balusters, handrails of well-chosen shape are able to attach any desirable style to the stairs. Stairs With Open Strings

In the stairs of this model open strings constitute primary bearing elements taking heavy loads. Open strings also are massive wooden beams, but they, unlike closed strings, have the teeth-shaped cuts. Here, the treads are laid upon the strings being a binder for them. When open strings are used, the stairs look more lightweight and open.

However, in such a construction the lateral butt ends of treads, risers, as also the places of their joining the open string become visible.
There are different means of solving this problem.

In the first case the riser can be made slightly protruding relative to the open string, previously a small radius shall be given to the sharp edges.

In the second case the edge of the riser is on a level with the open string. A Skirting Bracket is laid upon the butt end of the riser and upon the open string. Plase note that tread should have protrusion in the back corner. It is a very popular decision.

In the third case lateral sides of the riser and open string are cut at the angle of 45 degrees. Now the butt end becomes completely invisible. Such solution is more complicated as far as implementation is concerned but the result is worth your while.

When you use the third technique, the lateral butt ends of the open string shall be enlarged by the thickness of the riser.

To improve the aesthetic appearance of the lateral end of the treads you can cut part of tread and instead, cut the same part from the other piece of wood, but with the horizontal pattern. Please, see the pictures below.

To finish the lateral sides of the treads decorative molding may be used.  To finish the places  joining treads, risers, and open strings  decorative molding may be used

The fastening of treads to the open strings may be executed in different ways. You can read about it in detail in Building Stairs section .

As you already know, the drawings in Stairs Plans section are designed for application of newel posts at outer corner joints. If the open string to the wall is to fastened, you simply do not use the newel post at the outer corner joint, at that you shall previously make allowances in the drawings. To provide for the safety of stairs and also for load-carrying ability of open strings, you shall adhere to minimum permissible sizes below.

Unlike closed string stairs, in open string stairs the role of the last riser can be performed by the floor of the next level, which allows to shorten the length of the flight by one step in the plan. But at the level of the next floor the tread shall be necessarily present.

We have described above the models of stairs on closed strings and open strings, but it is possible to combine them in one staircase. For example, we can have a closed string at the outer part of the stairs, and an open string at the inner part, or vice versa. As a result we can get interesting designer decisions.
