Building stairs

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that there exist different construction and designer solutions in stairs building. Here everything will depend on the type, model of stairs, availability of certain tools and fastening parts. Therefore, below we will try to describe general features of the process of stairs making and assembling. Looking ahead, we want to turn your mind to the fact that prior to assembling all the details of the stairs shall be painted (you can read about it in more detail in the section Stair finishing).

Closed String Stairs

You shall prepare slots in the closed strings with the help of a router. Use patterns for more accurate and exact milling. As you already know from the section Stairs Models the slots can have different shape.

Radius of rounding of the tread forefront shall be repeated on the closed string.

There is also a variant when there is no need to make slots in the closed string at all. An open string fastened to the closed string provides a basis. For fixing them you can use glue and screws. Please pay attention that the drawings proposed in Stair Plans section are designed for application of slots in strings. So if you are planning use this method you need tell us and we help you with drawings of open strings.

If you plan using risers, you shall also prepare slots on the bottom sides of treads with the help of a router.

On the lateral sides of treads you shall prepare fixturing points. There are three variants of fastening treads to the closed string.

In the first case on the bottom sides of treads you shall prepare blind holes in which the nuts will be positioned. The bolt going through the closed string is screwed on the nut and a firm joint of the tread and closed string is formed.

In the second case on the lateral side of the tread a hole is prepared into which a steel threaded inserts is screwed. On the outer edges it has wide spiral thread. Inside it there is metric screw-thread, and a bolt going through the closed string draws together the tread and closed string.
In this case the fastening will be visible only from the side of the closed string.

The third variant as you already know from the section Stairs Models presupposes the usage of tension pins.

The joint of the newel post and closed string shall be executed similar to the first variant of fastening of treads with the help of a bolt and a nut.

Open String Stairs

To fasten the treads you shall make the tooth-shaped gains in the open strings.

In such a construction the lateral butt ends of treads, risers, as also the places of their joining the open string become visible. There are different means of solving this problem. They are described in detail in the section Stairs Models.

In case of open strings application there exist different ways of fastening the treads.
The first variant is to fasten the tread with screws from above. The heads of screws can be covered with decorative caps. It is also possible to cover the heads with the help of balusters.
