The second variant of fastening is the application of dowels. In the prepared holes preglued wooden dowels are inserted. Then the top part of dowels is also glued and the tread is laid upon. The dowel shall be inserted into the tread and open string with certain force.

The third variant presupposes the application of a special fastening element. This element has wide spiral thread on the outer edges and inside it there is metric screw-thread. At first the fastening element is screwed into the top butt part of the open string, and then the bolt goes through the tread and draws together the tread and open string.
In this case the fastening will be visible from the side of the tread.

The variants of joints of newel posts and open strings, as well as corner joints of open strings are described below.

You shall necessarily apply glue of high quality on all stud joints, as well as on wedges.

Balusters Fastening

The balusters fastening techniques depend on the stairs model and handrail design. First go, we want to mention one important moment which concerns the choice of balusters and a handrail.

If you plan using balusters with round edges, you shall choose a handrail without a trench at the reverse side. You shall predrill a hole in the handrail of a diameter that is 0.1 – 0.2 mm larger than the diameter of the baluster. Then the baluster is inserted into the handrail. Top ends of the balusters should be previously glued.

If you plan using balusters with square edges, you shall choose a handrail with a trench at the reverse side. The balusters are precut at the given angle and the handrail is laid upon them, then the balusters fastened with screws and the gaps between the balusters are covered with an decorative molding. The decorative molding can be fastened with the help of screws or headless nails. Top ends of the balusters and invisible side of the decorative molding can be previously glued.

The fastening techniques of the top part of balusters are the same for closed string stairs and open string stairs.

The fastening of the bottom part of balusters in the closed string stairs and open string stairs slightly differs due to the features of construction of these stairs.

Fastening of the Bottom Part of Balusters on Closed String Stairs

When using cylindrical balusters you shall predrill a hole in the closed string as well as in the handrail of a diameter that is 0.1 – 0.2 mm larger than the diameter of the baluster. Then the baluster is inserted into the closed string and covered with a handrail.

The balusters of square shape are fastened on the closed string with the help of a baserail. At first the baserail is fastened immediately to the closed string with screws. Then the precut balusters are inserted into the baserail at regular intervals,  and into the gaps which have been formed between them a decorative molding is inserted. Balusters should be previously fastened with screws. All the details can be previously glued.

Fastening of the Bottom Part of Balusters on Open String Stairs

For fastening of cylindrical and square balusters with cylindrical pins at their bottom you shall predrill holes of a diameter that is 0.1 – 0.2 mm larger than the diameter of the baluster. Then the baluster is inserted into the tread and covered with a handrail. Bottom ends of the balusters should be previously glued.

Square balusters without cylindrical pins at their bottom can be fastened in different ways on the open string stairs. The possible variants of balusters fastening are given below.

Handrail Fastening Techniques

In the pictures below the possible variants of fastening of the handrail to the newel post, and of the newel post to the base. The fastening parts can be bought as prepared sets.

The installation of turned or carved balusters can be executed in two ways.
In first case the balusters are installed so that the imaginary line going through the point in one and the same place of every baluster is parallel to the handrail.
In the second case the imaginary line going through the point in one and the same place of either of the two baluster on one tread shall be parallel to the tread.

If there is no trench in the handrail, the balusters with a square bottom can be fastened with the help of screws. The head of the screw shall also be covered with a decorative cap. The same technique can be used for fastening of the bottom part of balusters on the stairs with open strings.

When making a railing you can use Rosette in the upper level in the point of the handrail adjoining the wall. One more possible solution is to install a half of a baluster or a newel post in the point of the handrail adjoining the wall. It improves the aesthetic perception of the entire balustrade and makes it look integrated.

The assembled stairs represent one big element of construction which is subjected to various loads particularly the shear loads. In order to eliminate stairs shifting the top and bottom part of the stairs shall be reliably fastened. The techniques and variants of fastening depend on the type, model of stairs, as also on the type of materials used for the walls and ceiling. In the pictures below some fastening techniques are shown.

Here we tried to describe the most common constructional solutions by assembling stairs.
In conclusion of this article we would like to underline the milestones of assembling stairs.
- first of all, take work safety into account when performing any types of work
- prior to assembling carefully think over the fastening techniques of details and prepare the required fastening parts and tools
- think over the sequence of stairs assembling
- assemble the stairs very accurately to avoid damaging of paint-and-lacquer coating
- after overall assembly, perform an additional checkout of tightening of the fastening elements.
