Preparation to work

Safety Rules

First of all prior to any work let’s talk about accidents prevention and accurate work site arrangement.
The work site shall be in a good light and well-ventilated. Operating space around machines or around processed parts shall be free from foreign objects. The work site shall always be clean and tidy. The floor shall be level and shall have nonskid covering. It is not allowed to have oil spots or other substances making the surface slippery on the floor. You shall obligatory have the general circuit breaker with the help of which you can cut off current all the electrically operated tools in the workshop.
At the workplace you shall always have a first aid kit with a set of necessary medicaments and dressing for first-aid treatment in case of injuries. If you feel tired or ill, you shall stop working immediately, and put it off for some other time. Do not drink spirits and do not take drugs reducing attention concentration when working. The workplace shall also be equipped with fire-extinguishing means – foam extinguishers and sandboxes.

 

 


Always wear protecting spectacles and protective clothes when working. Protective clothes shall be free of straps, slings and other loose elements, which can get stuck in rotating elements of machines. Use protecting masks for respiratory protection. Use headpieces or earplugs for protection of hearing organ. Use only serviceable tools. Check the blade grinding of hand-held tools, the attachment of their handles, and check the handles for the presence of cracks or chips. Be sure to cut off current all the electrically operated tools when you examine them or replace their cutting parts. Check the blade grinding, check the frame and electrical cord for damages, check “Start” and “Stop” buttons for successful operation. When working with electrically operated tools, make sure that the cord is as far from cutting parts as possible. Use only grounded tools. Do not blow away the dust with your mouth or with compressor, and do not sweep it away with your hands. Use special brushes for this purpose. When working, keep the body position providing for maximum steadiness. Avoid such positions of your hands when they can slip down and get into rotating elements of a machine. Do not leave active electrically operated tools. Work with lacquer or paint in a well-ventilated room, and use protecting masks.
Do not allow your children to stand around in the workshop.
On completing the work cut off current all the electrically operated tools and tidy up the work site. Do not keep chips and sawdust in the workshop. Assign a separate place outside the workshop for it, and install a metal container for sawdust collection. Do not smoke in the workshop. It is forbidden to use open flame sources in the workshop, for example, for heating.

Selection of Materials

Hardwood, such as red oak, Brazilian cherry, white oak, hickory, American cherry, suits for stairs construction best of all. And such choice is not random. Almost all the elements of the staircases take heavy loads. Here we need tough, durable, wear-resistant wood. Upon purchase you shall pay particular attention to the absence of dotes, black checks, shakes, knots. In order to avoid casting and checking of wood buy only well-dried and mature material of high quality. Focus your attention on the quality of polish of the ready-made components. It will save you a lot of time at the stage of preparation of components for painting. Purchase materials only from trusted suppliers. Nowadays there are numerous companies engaged in production, selling and delivery of components for staircases. Among the assortment offered by them you may find ready-made balusters, handrails, treads, newels, moldings of all shapes and sizes for almost any architectural style. Necessary Tools

Now let’s look upon the tools required for staircase construction.
The best variant for staircase construction is the availability of a workshop with stationary machines, electrically operated tools, and various hand-held tools. If you do not have an equipped workshop, you can use a garage or some other suitable place. But you shall take work safety into account – follow the regulations of work site arrangement for woodwork.
